Metalloinvest is a leading global producer and supplier of HBI and iron ore products, and a regional producer of high quality steel. The company is the second largest producer of pellets, and one of the regional leaders in production of rolled steel niche brands.

Metalloinvest comprises of leading iron ore production facilities in Russia – Lebedinsky mining processing plant (GOK) and Mikhailovsky mining processing plant (GOK); steel mills – Oskol Elektrometallurgical Plant; a ferrous scrap enterprise – Ural Scrap Company, as well as assets that ensure service maintenance and external shipments of raw materials to other mining and steel companies.

Systemic environmental project covering six areas:

Organization of separate waste collection;

Eco-education;

Ecovolunteering;

Resource saving;

Organization of “green” procurement;

Organizing environmentally friendly corporate events.

Project background

External preсonditions:

Compliance with the requirements of environmental legislation in the field of waste management;

Compliance with national goals and projects;

Achieving SDG 12: responsible production and consumption;

Request from external stakeholders: clients, suppliers, residents of the territories of presence, authorities, etc. - to improve environmental culture.

Internal preconditions:

2020 - Metalloinvest’s Environmental Program was developed;

2021 - the list of material UN SDGs has been updated and includes “Responsible production and consumption”, “Clean and affordable energy”, “Combating climate change”;

Corporate waste management practices;

Request from the employees to improve environmental culture.

Project goals and objectives

Goals:

Increasing the level of involvement of employees in the implementation of the corporate strategy for sustainable development and reducing the impact on the environment;

Formation of a proactive approach to the waste management system.

Objectives:

Improving the waste production and cosumption management system;

Implementation of best practices for responsible consumption;

Improving the environmental culture of the Company’s employees;

Improving the Company's public image in the field of responsible environmental management.

Activities within the project

1. Audit of the offices of the LLC Management Company "METALLOINVEST" in the cities of Moscow and Stary Oskol;

2. Development of methodological materials for greening office spaces and saving resources;

3. Development of a survey to assess the level of environmental culture among employees;

4. Organization of separate waste collection in the Company;

5. Organization of separate collection of electronic waste and batteries in the Company;

6. Carrying out environmental volunteer events - at the federal (#BoomBattle, “River Marathon”), corporate (Ecomarathon, actions in the Alekhino and Belogorye nature reserves, #Electrozima Together, beautification campaigns in the estates “Polenovo”, “Yasnaya Polyana” , “Nikolskoye-Uryupino”) and cross-corporate levels (All-Russian Cleanliness Day);

7. Conducting environmental awareness campaigns.

Achievements and results

The LLC Management Company "METALLOINVEST" in Moscow and Stary Oskol got the voluntary certification of “GREEN OFFICE.ECOGREENOFFICE”, confirming the compliance of office spaces with environmental requirements;

In 2022, 41% of the average number of employees of the LLC Management Company METALLOINVEST (Moscow) were trained in the separate waste collection;

From 2018 to 2023, more than 10 thousand employees completed the “Environmental Culture and Ethics” learning course;

Agreements have been concluded for separate waste disposal;

2,500 employees are involved in corporate volunteering, including environmental volunteering;

As part of the Eco-Marathon 2023, 12 events were held, 1000+ participants and 450+ volunteers were involved, 17 tons of waste paper and 16 m3 of garbage were collected;

#BoomBattle-2023: 12 tons of waste paper were collected and 123 collection points were opened at the Company's sites and in the cities of presence.
