The National ESG Alliance was established in January 2022 as a response to the consolidated demand of the biggest Russian companies that seek to unite their efforts and potential on their pathway to the sustainable model transition. Alliance was supported by the high-profile Russian companies that employ more than 1,5 million people and have a total revenue of 10 trillion rubles.

Currently, the ESG Alliance is the only business association in Russia that deals solely with the sustainable development agenda and unites companies that have already introduced these principles in their business model and are deliberately moving forward with the ESG-transformation. As of today, it includes 25 founding members that are leaders of sustainable transition in their respective sectors: industry, finance, real estate, retail, pharmaceuticals and others. “Open-door” policy implies that new participants are welcome to enter a partnership.

The Alliance is a self-organizing structure of a “new type, where a prominent role in determining the vector of activities is given to committees and working groups. Today Alliance includes 5 permanent committees (on ecology, climate and environmental protection; infrastructure and standardization; sustainable finance; international relations and social responsibility), as well as two working groups (on climate and sustainable supply chains). The supreme management body of the Alliance is the Supervisory board, which includes representatives of all member companies.

Distinctive features of the Alliance are flexibility and adaptive planning of operations, based on the fast-changing context, as well work in the interest of all Russian business: all products and projects of the Alliance, including methodological developments, analytical research and new digital services, are made public and become available not only for the member companies, but to a wide range of stakeholders.
For the period of 2023-2024 our mission is to facilitate maintenance and development of national ESG-agenda in Russia for the benefit of the ESG transformation leaders by consolidating efforts of big companies and the state. By 2030 the Alliance shall promote the wider spread of the agenda in Russia, integrating SMEs and the society as a whole in addition to big companies that are already ESG-transformation leaders.
Mission
Goals
Three Strategic Goals lie at the core of the Alliance activities, approved for the period of 2022-2024:

  • To act as a mediator (not a lobbyist) between the business and the state on all regulatory issues that cover sustainable development of business and ESG-transformation.
  • To act as a methodologist and a driver (i.e., to create practical solutions) for ESG-transformation for ever-growing number of companies, as well as for SMEs, involved in their supply chains.
  • To maintain relations with international community and build partnerships with “friendly” jurisdictions (BRICS, EAEU, SCO) which are key trading partners of the Russian export-oriented companies.

National ESG Alliance
Message of the CEO
Andrey Sharonov
Alliance is an open organisation. We see ourselves as a national informational ESG platform, propagandist of sustainable development ideas, active participant of the national and international initiatives process creation. We are ready for collaboration with companies, public and industrial bodies, governmental and international organisations. Together we can do more.

This is the portrait of the Alliance’s members who are recognised leaders of the sustainable transition in their industries. Their example can attract others including owners of small and medium enterprises. Alliance is meant to contribute to the realisation of the potential which is a part of ESG transformation. As well as support stability and devotion to ESG principles by means of uniting efforts of Russian business leaders in forming an updated ESG ideology in the country. The one who will be able to maintain today his motivation to reach high goals will provide opportunities for himself to adapt to the changing world.
Today we have reached a new geopolitical reality where companies were forced to concentrate their efforts mainly on preserving business, supply chains, supporting employees and local communities. In the competition to gain attention ESG agenda can temporarily be left in the background. At the same time whatever happens in the international relations of Russia and the West we should not let our approaches towards sustainability and according practices degradate. We also need to be informed about what is happening in the East, as we believe in the long term value creating and the inevitability of the harmonic business development idea, we recognise it as a paradigm of a principally different quality of life, basis for technological progress and fundament of harmonic business development with consideration of present and future generations expectations, - meaning that ESG agenda maintains its actuality and stays a strategic vector for the market’s leaders.
Sustainable development topic during the last years has been on the front of the global business and political agenda. Compliance with ESG requirements has become the key factor of preserving a competitive national economy and priority target for the business and country. Russia reached serious progress on this matter striving not to be left on the edge of the world’s civilization.
Dear friends!

Dear friends!
We see ourselves as

A mediator between business and the state:

The Alliance is intended to be a platform, bringing companies together to involve authorities in discussing relevant issues on ESG-transformation, to demonstrate contribution of the “green companies” in achieving the National Goals of development of the Russian Federation; and assisting government support these activities by proper regulation and involve a greater number of companies in the agenda.

A methodological expert:

The Alliance is a “project office”, which develops such methodological and infrastructure products and services on ESG that do not exist in Russia and are aimed at helping business and the state in implementing the sustainable transition programs and strategies.

An ambassador of the Russian ESG-agenda at the external markets:

The Alliance is committed to maintain relations on sustainable development with traditional Western infrastructure partners of the Russian companies, as well as to build partnerships with new “friendly” jurisdictions. Russian export-oriented companies, even shifting its focus to new product and investment markets, still remain participants of the global supply chains which tend to “green” not only in western markets, but in the East as well.
Consolidator of the “green initiatives”:

The Alliance brings together efforts and potential of the companies to jointly participate in significant projects at cross-sectoral and inter-agency level. Therefore, provides companies access to such solutions and products that each company is not able to produce on its own due to the lack of time, analytical, methodological and financial resources.
