The ESG Alliance to develop biodiversity project classification and risk assessment methodology

22.05.2025

Post

In 2025, the ESG Alliance, in collaboration with its methodological partner Kept, will begin developing a classification system for corporate biodiversity projects, as well as a methodology for assessing biodiversity-related risks, corporate biodiversity initiatives quality and results. The integration of this project in the Alliance’s work plan reflects the growing interest from both the business community and the government in biodiversity conservation and reducing negative impacts on ecosystems, while there is still a lack of formalized national-level criteria for evaluating biodiversity and ecosystem services risks, as well as for assessing the quality and effectiveness of related projects.

“The ESG Alliance is committed to supporting Russian companies in addressing the methodological and practical gaps in biodiversity and ecosystem services risk assessment. We also aim to develop a classification system for biodiversity and ecosystem services projects that aligns with both national and international regulatory frameworks. These tools may eventually be integrated at the national level through initiatives under the emerging Russian Biodiversity Conservation Strategy, and potentially promoted through BRICS channels,” — said Daria Grigoryeva, sustainability director at Polyus and member of the Alliance’s Supervisory Board.

The development of such classification system and assessment methodology will not only allow companies to classify their biodiversity and ecosystem-related projects but will also provide practical tools for assessing risks, as well as the quality and effectiveness of these initiatives.
