Involvement of talented students in scientific research activities

State Corporation "Rosatom"

State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom (ROSATOM) is a diversified holding company that combines assets in the energy, mechanical engineering, and construction sectors. Its strategy is to develop low-carbon generation, including wind power. The Rosatom State Corporation is a national leader in electricity production (about 20% of total output) and ranks first in the world in terms of the largest portfolio of orders for the construction of nuclear power plants: 33 power units are at various stages of implementation in 10 countries. Rosatom is the only company in the world that has competencies in the entire technological chain of the nuclear fuel cycle, from the extraction of natural uranium to the final stage of the life cycle of nuclear facilities. Its scope of activity also includes the production of innovative nuclear and non-nuclear products, scientific research, development of the Northern Sea Route and environmental projects, including the creation of eco-technoparks and a state system for the management of hazardous industrial waste.

Project description

The program of scientific internships for students at Rosatom enterprises was initiated by the private institution “Science and Innovation”. These internships are a mechanism for attracting talented future scientists to the industry at the early stages of university study and involve them in the scientific work.

events
Activities within the project

The program is implemented through interaction between several stakeholders:

Educational organizations of higher education disseminate information about the internships and create favorable conditions for students participation (allocate a day for the internship, fixed in the student’s schedule for research work).

The scientific organization of the sector provides the intern with real research tasks, a scientific supervisor-mentor, evaluates the intern’s activities, and also manages the process of employment, adaptation and other personnel issues (salary payments, business trips to attent relevant events).

Interns conduct research activities in the organization, take part in scientific, training and team-building events that improve their skills.

The private institution “Science and Innovation” coordinates the participation of all parties in the program:

-conducts a promotional campaign and attracts specialized candidates, incl. through special career guidance events;

-organizes case championships and other events to promote the program and select trainees;

-preparees and posts case assignments on the program website;

-accepts applications centrally through the program website;

- carries out all communication activities with the candidate at the stages of selection;

-checks the video presentations and portfolio of scientific achievements;

-provides methodological support for document preparation;

- organizes and conducts scientific, training and team-building events for interns.

achievements
Achievements and results

During the implementation of the program since 2020, more than 1.5 thousand students from more than 80 universities in Russia have applied to participate in it. 307 students became interns of scientific organizations: in 202 - 100 people, in 2021 - 111 students and 96 people– in 2022.

65 students/graduates who completed the internship (27 people in 2021 and 37 people in 2022) received permanent positions in nuclear sector organizations. At the moment, 90% of people wtih permanent positions have remained working in the industry.

The share of young people (employees under 35 years of age) in science in 2022 exceeded 35% in the scientific division (an increase of 10% compared to 2019); in a number of organizations the share increased by 1.5-2.5 times:

NIIgraphite – from 42% to 65%;

Giredmet – from 27% to 48%;

TRINITY – from 15% to 38%.

As a result of the project implementation, the severity of the problem of transferring critical knowledge has been reduced: graduates of the internship program who are adapted and loyal to the organization may take over the positions of their scientific supervisors and mentors in the event of their leave. In general, the project provides an opportunity for talented students from all regions of Russia to enter the scientific community of the nuclear industry, find their own scientific trajectory, get an early start and rapid growth in their scientific career.
